Critical Care

Caring for the Upper Cumberland. With two separate intensive care units and a fully equipped emergency department, CRMC is a leader in providing lifesaving care to patients from the Cookeville area and the entire Upper Cumberland region.

Emergencies. CRMC Emergency Services is a 24 hour a day resource serving over 40,000 patients annually. In August of 1999, we opened our new Emergency Department facility with 27 private rooms: 11 clinic exam spaces, 2 OB/GYN exam spaces, 2 eye/ENT spaces, 8 critical care treatment areas, 2 orthopedic rooms, one decontamination area, one safe room, and a triage area.

CRMC has the experienced emergency physicians of Volunteer Medical Group (VMG) on duty 24-hours a day in the Emergency Department. The doctors in VMG are assisted by physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Our nurses in the Emergency Department are trained and certified in many phases of critical care. Working together as a team of professionals, the CRMC ED staff is continually improving their delivery of emergency care.

CRMC staff serves as active participants in the community EMS system - offering themselves as a resource for education of local EMS personnel and nursing students from Tennessee Technological University.

CRMC maintains a close working relationship with other health care institutions in the region. Our ED acts as a hub for specialty patient referrals in the areas of cardiac services, neurosurgical services, pulmonary services, orthopedics, oncology, and urology. The heliport outside of our ED is often used to transport in patients from the surrounding area.

Intensive Care Units. CRMC has two unique intensive care units providing exemplary care to patients and families - an eighteen (18) bed ICU and an eight(8) bed CVICU.

Our 18 bed medical/surgical intensive care unit (ICU) has a space design allowing nurses to stay at the patient's bedside. A mini nurses' station is located between every two (2) beds with full visibility of the assigned patients. There are PCs at each station where nurses have immediate access to lab results, imaging data and drug information through a specialized order-entry and data retrieval program. These PCs also offer a clinical results program so physicians have quick access up-to-date patient information while they make rounds in the unit. The unit also benefits from automated dispensing of medications so as to prevent delayed delivery of urgently required drugs.

Staff Specialists. CRMC's ICU has a clinical coordinator on each shift. These RNs serve as resource for other staff, assisting with tasks from patient admissions to actual procedures. They also work with our physician intensivists to make triage decisions so we ensure appropriate levels of care for our patients. A dedicated critical care nurse educator plans and presents ongoing education needed to keep staff current on new technology and methods of care delivery.

Staff Teamwork. For both the ICU and the CVICU, it is the collaborative efforts of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, laboratory and imaging staff, and environmental services that enable us to maintain a high standard of care and service for our critically ill patients.
